European Film Academy Masterclass - The Sound of the Image

2012 / 07 / 15

For one week in the beginning of July, the European Film Academy (EFA) Master Class 2012 THE SOUND OF THE IMAGE focused on the topic of sound in feature films. The multi-disciplinary workshop headed by sound re-recording mixer Bruno Tarrière and sound editor Selim Azzazi brought 18 European film professionals, among them composers, sound designers and sound engineers, but also a sound supervisor, a producer and a director, to Berlin and Potsdam. Titas Petrikis was a participant in this event as well.

The master class at the Film and Television University “Konrad Wolf” (HFF) in Potsdam was divided into group sessions (screening and analysis) dedicated to various aspects in mixing and editing sound such as dialogue and ambiance, Efx and foley, music, and sound design, as well as hands-on exercises in smaller groups in the editing suite.

The evenings were reserved for special visits by colleagues and collaborators of the tutors: Turkish director Yeşim Ustaoğlu (JOURNEY TO THE SUN, PANDORA’S BOX) discussed with the participants the co-operation between different departments for the creation of a sound track. US music editor Dick Bernstein, who has worked with the likes of James Cameron, Jean-Jacques Annaud and Wim Wenders, talked about the fusion of original sound, sound effects and score. Sound designer Richard King (USA) - who has worked on films such as INCEPTION, MAGNOLIA and MASTER AND COMMANDER - came to discuss the creative use of sound. And picture editor Svetolik Mica Zajc (a former sound editor) from Serbia, who regularly collaborates with Emir Kusturica, discussed the link between picture and sound editing. Before the regular evaluation, a special excursion brought the participants from Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden together with audio systems engineer and consultant Paul Jarvis of Meyer Sound.

A documentation DVD of the EFA Master Class 2012 will be available from the EFA Secretariat.

The EFA Master Class 2012 was realised with the support of the MEDIA Programme of the EU, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Film and Television University “Konrad Wolf” (HFF) and Meyer Sound.
