Jonas Sobieskis - Performance in Alytus Municipality Theater (directed by Albertas Vidžiūnas)
2020 / 02 / 06
"Jonas Sobieskis" is a performance of Lithuanian dramaturgy that focuses on important topics of everyday life. The play delves into the topic of domestic alcoholism, which is still "uncomfortable" in society, and a person's freedom of decision to change the situation.
"Jonas Sobieskis is a self-defeating hero. Having decided to get out of the exhausting quagmire, not to drink alcohol, he, like a biblical character, with the support of a choir of angels, fights addiction, causing confusion in the family and society", says director Albertas Vidžiūnas.
The grotesque drama of an oversaturated hero drowning in addictions opens up the sensitive issue of one person's freedom of decision. Faced with the freedom of choice, Jonas Sobieskis experiences great anxiety, and the space in which his thinking, emotions, will to achieve goals and ability to make independent decisions are expressed, determines the hostility of the environment and provokes conflicts. It becomes clear - freedom is a difficult gift that requires daily decision-making.
In life, we often hear YOU CAN DO IT, in the play it is the main leitmotif, goal and action that accompanies Jonas Sobieskis until his death.
"Jonas Sobieskis" is the third part of Herkaus Kunčius's triptych, written especially for the Alytus City Theatre. The first, "No Children's Games" (2017) reveals a realistic caricature of modern family relations, the second - "Liberty Arena" (2018) explores today's closedness caused by the comfort of a comfortable household.
