Titas Started the Second Semester at Bournemouth University

2006 / 02 / 11

Bournemouth Media School (BMS), one of the five Screen Academies in UK, is among the best schools for media studies in the country. Since September of 2005, Titas studies at this School towards MA degree in Music Composing for films. Hence he settled down in the South of England. Www.TitasMusic.com has made a closer look at how Titas is doing over there.

Relaxed atmosphere and a hectic student life

Bournemouth is one of the most popular resort towns in the United Kingdom. Surrounded by beautiful English countryside, it is famous for beaches and rocks. If you visit Bournemouth, you will discover the relaxed atmosphere of the coastline. But it is only the first impression of the slow rhythm of life. You will see students running all over the place because there are several universities in Bournemouth. Long walks along the coast would inspire anyone, so it is no surprise that a lot of creative young people come to study media arts at the Bournemouth Media School.

You can choose Computer Animation, Corporate and Marketing Communications, Journalism and Communication, Media Production courses for BA or MA level studies, and many other options at the Bournemouth Media School. Each programme is promising, interesting, but challenging. Titas has already finished his first semester in postgraduate programme for Music Composing and started the second one.

He does not spend all of his time at the University. Students have to work a lot independently: watch films, comment them, do readings, create music, etc. “Good background of Political Sciences with a logical mindset helps a lot in understanding films and choosing better music for them. It is also surprising how much of such analysis about films we do during classes! Music has to be very subtle (carefully tailored to the story) if you want it work in the film”, says Titas about his experiences from the first semester.

Music composing for dramas, documentaries, creation of sounds for animation are just some of Titas’ projects for this semester. “That is a lot of work to do”, he admits, but from his mood it can be seen that he is not puzzled. Despite that he is prepared to accomplish all his goals and is eager to implement everything he learned. At www.TitasMusic.comyou can find Titas´ projects from last semester under the headingPortfolio. His newest work samples will also be published there.

Recently Titas´ music studio was transported to the United Kingdom. Titas feels much more comfortable about working conditions now. He is happy to have all the equipment handy for creating music in Bournemouth. Since Titas has recently purchased an electronic saxophone, we should not be surprised hearing saxophone sounds in his newest compositions. But there is more to it than just instruments and computers.

People around

Young specialists in Animation, Computer Visualisation, Digital Effects, Public Relations, also International Managers, Journalists, Sound Designers, Screenwriters and Editors are among Titas´ new course mates, colleagues and friends.

“Composers are very popular in the Media School”, says Titas. In Bournemouth Media School students cooperate in different projects. Everyone needs original good music. Luckily Titas is not the only one who is studying Composing; he has five colleagues, who are all experienced and eager to help others.

John Coghill has completed a degree in Music (Composition)/ Arts, he also studied one year in Berlin and has worked on a number of collaborative projects. Stuart Earl received a BA in music at Oxford and also works on various projects. Daniel Philips defines himself as an aspiring composer and has completed BA in music design. Dominic Thompson studied improvisation and composition at undergraduate level and later has been working as a composer, performer and teacher. Evangelos Papageorgious from Greece has several talents (preparing white sauce for spaghetti, improvising jazz music, etc.) and even more Diplomas in: Harmony, Counter point, Fugue, Piano and Composition.

Evangelos is one of Titas´closest friends. Both of them sometimes work on music projects together.

Prof. Stephen Deutsch shares his experience with students

It is not a surprise that Titas and Vangelis talk a lot about professor Stephen Deutsch from their school. Besides concert music Prof. Stephen Deutsch has composed over thirty scores for films, theatre, radio and television.

Prof. Stephen Deutsch has a significant expertise in the fields of Electronic Music, 20th century music techniques, film, TV, broadcasting and related subjects, and in 1992 founded the first MA level program for Composing at Bournemouth University. It was the first course of its kind in Europe, designed to equip postgraduate professional composers with the skills necessary to engage in writing music for film, tv, radio and other multi-media packages.

Prof. Stephen Deutsch has trained 45 composers who have since provided music for feature films, theatre, television and computer games. Titas notes, “It is a great experience to be mentored by Prof. Deutsch. It is just amazing how much knowledge he has about the music for film and how much there is still for me to learn to better understand this interesting world of audio and video relationship…”
