VMU Celebrates 35 Years of Liberal Arts Tradition in Lithuanian Higher Education

This milestone is crucial in shaping the philosophy of education. What are the global challenges democratic societies from West to East face today? Fear of not being re-elected and losing poll support creates a challenge to the concept of leadership. Democratic societies must connect to the essence of liberty and freedom in the 21st century. Liberal Arts education offers an opportunity to raise responsible generations, as it has historically excelled. Students start their careers in a creative environment where they must make decisions, often with a compromise or cost. This is a critical part of a democratic community—the ability to be responsible, sensitive, and proactive in decision-making.

A question was posed by Vilma Žydžiūnaitė: What happens when young people have too many choices and opportunities to shape their careers? The main benefit of Liberal Arts education is that it trains everyone to take small steps in the decision-making process, shape their character, and learn to make mistakes in search of the right decision. It is not about the fear of failure but rather about the willingness to leave the comfort of a safe—and in this regard, limited—life. Only then can we progress.

This is our mission at the Liberal Arts University: to help these young leaders emerge.
